Broodwood

You awaken, emerging from your seed pod under a million stars.
Your mind is hazy, yet core truths grip at your entire being.
You are a guardian of the Aisling, the great tree of dreams,
the very lifespring of the enchanted forest of Broodwood,
now sick and growing twisted with a nightmare blight.
All the dreamers of the world are in grave danger.

The Broodwood needs you.

What is Broodwood?

Broodwood is a multiplayer, text-based role-playing game for players 18 years old and above. It is set in a mystical forest plagued by an ailment known as the Blight. Each player character is a flying fae freshly entering the world after fully maturing in a pod in the Aisling, the great tree of dreams. As guardians of the Aisling, each character must fight both in the physical world and the world of dreams to fend off the nightmare blight.

Your home is all you know. You can't afford to lose it.

The Blight both infects the forest physically and infects the dreams of the Aisling itself. You'll thus foray deep into the forest and the dreams of others alongside your fellow fae.

Shape your world and weave the story of your part in the Broodwood's defense.

Gameplay Overview

Roleplay: Text-based RP with JRPG-like game mechanics and tools to support storytelling.

Setting: There are two main settings: the enchanted forest of Broodwood and the realm of dreams. In the forest, you may take on a variety of quests. You can heal blighted flora and fauna, hunt nightmare predators, gather resources such as herbs for brewing elixirs or raw materials for crafting equipment, and bolster the forest's magical defenses, to name a few. In the realm of dreams, you may lead expeditions to save the dreamers of the world from nightmares that can kill.

Storytellers: While Broodwood is supported by a volunteer staff who runs game-wide plots, everyone can be a storyteller in Broodwood by building their own mini-plots in the realm of dreams using a simple toolset. These plots can be linked to overarching game plots.

System: Combat is pseudo-turn-based (active time battle, ATB) inspired by some classic JRPGs. Customize your fae's fighting style by selecting from a variety of core magic and specialize in one or more elements among earth, wind, fire, water, light, and shadow.

Alts: You may have only one main character at any given time, but you can change nearly all aspects of your character either immediately or after a short waiting period. Fae are shape-shifters and experts in illusion. Moreover, you can assume multiple personas within the realm of dreams. Having only one character will not limit the aspects of the game you can experience.

Growth: Your character gains levels by earning XP through completing quests, helping the commune, leading forays, and winning battles. There's a daily XP cap, so grinding is limited.

Building: Every character can create 'dream' rooms and 'dream' NPCs, and also 'real' items, clothing, and food. There are daily and XP-based limits to the amount you can create.

Grid: All roleplay happens on a grid-like in a MUD. There's a world to explore and create. There are no scenes like in a MUSH, but in many ways, dream forays are isolated from the rest of the world and function much like a MUSH scene.

Death and Resurrection: For those adventurous souls, the Broodwood is full of grave danger. Thankfully, for the guardians of the Aisling, death is temporary and has little consequence. Upon death, the Aisling will call your essence home, where you will be reborn after a couple of real-life minutes at the cost of a minor experience loss.
